It’s official; last week we turned in our resignation letters to follow our dream of becoming full-time travelers. Travel is our shared passion, and we decided there’s no time like the present to take a career break to backpack around the world. We believe at our cores that travel changes you for the better, and that taking this time off will make our lives, our marriage and our faith richer.
Our Route:South America >> USA >> Europe >> Africa >> Australia >> Asia >> Europe >> USA
Over the next nine months we hope to visit 25+ countries on six different continents. We depart for Santiago, Chile, on November 3, and will spend seven weeks exploring Argentina, trekking through Patagonia, and backpacking through Peru en route to Machu Pichu, before coming home for the holidays then heading to Africa.
A big highlight of our trip, and really the reason the whole thing came about, will be to spend two months outside Kampala, Uganda, serving an organization near to our hearts, Come Let’s Dance. We were connected to CLD through our local church and will be serving alongside some of our friends in February and March.
Blog Goals: We discovered the world of miles and points travel (aka travel hacking) in January 2013. Getting My Points High was started in March 2014 as a way to help our family and friends learn how to travel better and cheaper. Now Getting My Points High will be the place we blog about our adventures on our round-the-world trip. We hope this is a place where you can follow along on our journey, as well as a resource of tangible tips for others visiting the same destinations.
This blog is still very much a work in progress, but we were too excited to contain our news any longer!
Budget: The primary reason we are able to afford a trip like this is because of the millions of miles and points we have earned. In the coming weeks we’ll be going into more detail about the types of points we redeemed and how exactly we earned them. Our goal is to spend less than $20,000 out of pocket, which is less than what we’d spend on annual living expenses in nine months here in Colorado. We’ll try to be as transparent as possible about our budget so you can see how attainable it is to ditch the 9-5 and set off on your own gap year or career break trip.
Travel Style: Our travel style is a bit unique. Thanks to our points we’ll be part-time luxury travelers, living it up in five-star hotels and drinking champagne in the front of the plane. But we’ll also be schlepping around our tents, taking overnight buses, eating street food, sleeping on the occasional couch and generally trying to travel as cheaply as possible. Luxury travel will be great when it works out, but our priority is to have authentic travel experiences and stretch our points and miles as far as possible. We are adventure junkies so you can expect to see posts about us jumping out of planes, sand-boarding, riding ostriches, road-tripping in camper vans, learning to scuba dive and so much more.
